One of the first things we did in Washington, DC was eat the most delicious pizza I have ever eaten, at Pi. It was Chicago style deep dish, topped with cheese, sliced meatballs, roasted peppers, and sauce, in that order. We know I am pretty serious about good pizza. I’ve never attempted deep dish, but this experience made me want to try.
Here are my camera-shy companions.
After the eating we did some pretty serious walking to burn it all off.
Lincoln Memorial
This one was especially meaningful because it was Martin Luther King Day weekend.
I love the ghost feet in this long exposure. Also I love how almost anywhere you go in the city, you can see the Washington Monument.
Have you ever gone out to eat with me? I am that person who wants to taste everything on everyone’s plate. Just a taste. If I were in prison my last meal would be: a slice of bruschetta, one or two pita triangles with artichoke dip, a tiny crispy crab cake with a bit of remoulade, one of those cocktail meatballs with the grape jelly and chili sauce, some really killer salsa with fresh cilantro, a tiny triangle of spanakopita, a little hummus, a bacon-wrapped water chestnut, a demitasse of {insert vegetable here} soup…. and maybe a hot wing.
Sometimes I just want hors d’oeuvres for dinner. Like, often.
So when my friend M came over for Downton Abbey and dinner, that is what we did. I made the fried ravioli (for the first and last time) and she made the spinach balls. So we had all 3 food groups: fried, cheesy, and wine. It was excellent.
I’m not going to tell you how to make fried ravioli. Don’t do it; i’s not worth it. A lot of mess for a greasy pile of Meh. You can do better. The spinach balls on the other hand, are worth getting your hands dirty for.
Spinach balls recipe:
2 packages of frozen chopped spinach (10 oz), thawed and well drained
So you resolved to eat healthier this new year? Oh good, me too.
I’ve already made this twice… that’s how good it is.
Simple, simple: fresh pizza dough, rolled out, brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with minced garlic. Add caramelized onion and broccoli that has been ever so slightly cooked in the onion skillet. Top with half moons of italian sausage (I confess to using chicken sausage) and fresh mozzarella.
If you aren’t going to use fresh mozzarella, then don’t even bother, okay?
Bake for 10 minutes at 450 on a pizza stone that has preheated for like a half hour. Goes nicely with football, friends, and homebrewed IPA.
My favorite thing about the river walk is that it is always there to go for a run.
My favorite thing about fall is the angled sunlight.
My favorite thing about my phone is that it is a kickass tiny camera. And telephone. And music machine.
